Update on the Wildfires at Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park
Post Updated: July 20th, 12:45 PM
As many of you may have heard, two wildfires sparked by lightning on the morning of Thursday, July 10th, have led to the full closure of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. The fire has already burned more than 4,250 acres along the park’s South Rim and is currently at 21% contained.
The situation continues to evolve, and fire crews remain on the ground focusing on containment lines and keeping nearby communities safe. While we’re hopeful for progress in the days ahead, we also know that the impacts of this fire will be felt long after the flames are out, both on the landscape itself and on the infrastructure that supports visitors.
That’s exactly why our organization, Friends of the Black Canyon, exists. We’re dedicated to supporting the park through projects that protect, restore, and enhance this national treasure, ensuring future generations can enjoy it. In the coming months, there will be significant work needed to help the park recover from these wildfires, from rebuilding trails and overlooks to supporting habitat restoration and educational programs.
If you love the Black Canyon as much as we do and want to be part of its recovery, we invite you to consider donating. Your support directly helps us assist the park with post-fire restoration efforts and ensures that this awe-inspiring canyon continues to inspire visitors for years to come.
Thank you for keeping the park, its staff, the firefighters, and our local community in your thoughts during this challenging time. Together, we can help the Black Canyon come back even stronger.
