Part-Time Independent Contractor –
Program & Operations Support

Organization: Friends of the Black Canyon (FOBC)
Location: Western Slope, Colorado (remote with occasional in-person support preferred)
Hours: 15–20 hours per month
Compensation: $20–$25/hour (1099 Independent Contractor)

About Friends of the Black Canyon

Friends of the Black Canyon (FOBC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to supporting the preservation, restoration, and community connection to Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park and Curecanti National Recreation Area.

Following the July 2025 wildfire, the need for community-driven restoration and support has grown significantly—accelerating FOBC’s goals for 2026, 2027, and beyond. With the support of a generous donor, FOBC is excited to expand its capacity by bringing on a part-time independent contractor to help meet this moment.

Position Overview

FOBC is seeking a highly organized, self-directed, and mission-aligned independent contractor to support communications, volunteer coordination, and event execution. This role is ideal for someone with nonprofit, board, or community engagement experience who thrives in a dynamic environment with evolving priorities.

This individual will report to the Chair and Co-Chair and work collaboratively with board members and volunteer leads. While guidance and project direction will be provided, this role requires a high level of independence, initiative, and sound judgment.

Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

Communications & Content

  • Manage organizational communications, including email correspondence

  • Assist with the development of annual reports, newsletters, and quarterly updates

  • Help maintain consistent messaging, voice, tone, and brand alignment across materials i.e. website, Facebook, Instagram & TikTok 

 

Volunteer Coordination

  • Support recruitment, onboarding, and coordination of volunteers

  • Assist volunteer leads with scheduling and communication

  • Help strengthen community engagement and participation

Event Support

  • Assist in planning, organizing, and executing community events and fundraisers

  • Coordinate logistics, materials, and follow-up communications

Administrative & Operational Support

  • Provide support to board members and committee leads on specific projects

  • Help track tasks, timelines, and deliverables across initiatives

  • Assist with general organizational needs as they arise

Qualifications

Preferred (not required):

  • Experience with nonprofit organizations, boards, or community initiatives

  • Background in communications, event planning, or volunteer management

Required Skills & Attributes:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Exceptional attention to detail and organizational ability

  • Ability to work independently with minimal oversight

  • High level of professionalism and reliability

  • Alignment with FOBC’s mission, vision, and community values

  • Ability to interpret direction and respond thoughtfully and efficiently

Independent Contractor Requirements

  • Must operate as an independent contractor (1099)

  • Responsible for maintaining own insurance and applicable business requirements

  • FOBC will provide a 1099-NEC annually
